OUR BRIEF HISTORY

In existence since 1946, Memon Women’s Associaon stands strong for over 75 years now.
The foresightedness of forming an associaon for the ladies of our Jamat can be aributed to the Late Aishabai Noormohamed Jin, Late Hurbai Mohamed Sokwalla & Late Kulsumbai Abdulkader Laving. The three ladies took the historic and unprecedented act of forming the Memon Women’s Associaon in 1946. The first step the ladies took under the Associaon was to set up a sewing class with the Late Kulsumbai Mohamed Yusuf Noorany heading the class. The efforts lasted two years and the Associaon lost its momentum, and the sewing class was taken over by the Jamat. The Associaon lapsed into a period of dormancy for the next one decade.
The Late Noormohamed Abdulrehman Laving (Mithoo Master) convinced some ladies to have an associaon of their own. Late Aishabai Noormohamed Jin thus took the iniave once again. She was joined by Dilshad Yakub Kasmani. The idea was supported by the then Chairman of the Jamat, Late Mohamed Hussein Essa Kasmani and the Associaon was re-established in August 1958. Four addional ladies joined the two pioneers: Late Hurbai Mohamed Sokwalla, Sakinabai Fakirmohamed Harunani, Sakinabai Alimohamed Jinjawalla, and Mehtab Banu Khalid Noorani.
Late Aishabai Noormohamed Jin and Dilshad Yakub Kasmani would serve as teachers in our Baby Class in the mornings and visit almost every house in the Jamat in the aernoons in a franc membership drive. With great assistance from the Chairman of the Jamat Mohamed Hussein Essa Kasmani and his wife and Sakinabai Fakirmohamed Harunani, 50 ladies joined the Associaon at a monthly fee of 50 cts. The luring factor was that the Associaon would start a cooking class. The first meeng was held in August 1958 and late Aishabai Jin convinced Kulsumbai Mohamed Yusuf Noorani to take the lead in the formally formed Associaon. Late Kulsumbai Noorani thus became the first Chairlady of the Associaon.
The unbroken link of the leadership and the Associaon itself connues to date…..
